TikTok: My New Obsession
I have neglected this blog for a long time. My hope was during the quarantine that I would somehow find more time to write and create other content. Fortunately, I’ve been busy with work. Busier than I had actually anticipated, which is a good thing and I am grateful for that.
I’m working from home and by the time my workday is over, I want to distance myself from the computer. However, I love creating content and as we’ve all learned there are plenty of platforms to do that on. The most recent discovery for me is a little app called TikTok.
Once upon a time it was called musical.ly but was rebranded a while back. Now I know I had a musical.ly account but I somewhere along the way I’ve lost what I had on the app, which wasn’t much so it’s no loss.
However, earlier this year I downloaded TikTok and have quickly become obsessed with it. I really did think that I was going to have more ‘free-time’ to create these micro-videos but as I mentioned before, I simply haven’t made the time to do it. I also get this app is not necessarily in my demographic but I’m seeing more and more Gen Xers getting on board with it. I’m definitely more of a watcher than a creator but I’m hoping to motivate my family to change that.

Because my branding efforts for the last decade have revolved around pro wrestling, many of my videos are wrestling related. I have one video (that was originally shot by my friend Rachel) from a wrestling show that has caught fire. In the first few days, it reached more than 100,000 views which boggles my mind. Even more surprising, the last few days the video is seeing a resurgence and is now at more than 132,000 views.
I don’t report these numbers to brag. I’m legitimately dumbfounded by this app and don’t understand exactly how it works. I think that’s part of the reason why I love it so much. The creativity that shines from other people also impresses me. Right now it’s the I’m Just a Kid challenge that I enjoy the most. Once the quarantine and social distancing is a thing of the past, my hope is to do one of these videos with my mom, using a photo that more than 45 years old.
If you’re on TikTok, tell me what you enjoy most about it. I’m looking forward to learning more about the app and seeing the other uses it can hold for branding and marketing purposes as well. Look me up too and let me know you saw this blog. (@kevin_hunsperger)
